Just wrapped up a whirlwind week of straight photo shoots, with one more week to go. Today, left off on an especially high note with tons of energy, laughter, and a tumble (thank you! you know who you are). I cannot wait for the images I've photographed to hit new-stands in the near future. Also, I have one more month to go before I'm trading in my snow boots for a light jacket and some sunshine.

Personal Projects

I've long had the idea of publishing a book on a very personal project that has been worked on since early 2008. Though the work has been primarily done in Chicago, I've been focusing on expanding it in two other states in the coming months. The fine art project has been on family funeral homes in western culture. Though this project has only been seen during my thesis at Columbia College, and have kept dormant otherwise from any public eyes. I think I've been stubborn long enough, and exhausted from seeking publication, that I will be making this public for the first time while I still work on documenting this personal and intimate project.
In the coming months, I will be selecting one image to post on this blog as well as a details of this project, while I restart it.

The project, Solace, has always been relevant to me from two areas in my life that have always been important. From the days of high school, I have longed and wanted to go into mortuary science, being pro-founded with anatomy and the science's that evolved around mortuary work. Though I always enjoyed photography, my main intentions were to graduate from high school and attend a college of mortuary science. Tragically, shortly after my high school graduation, I lost my significant other/fiance' to a tragic accident, and halted all intentions of my dreams to cope with my lose, as well as re-figure out my life. While it worked in the latter to fall into photography during college courses, as well as readjust my life to normalcy, I have never kept the idea of one day becoming a mortician later in life, far from my mind. The project was formed once I had found a wonderful teacher, Paul D'Amato, who helped open my eyes and push me into this project that has longed tinkered in my head. I wanted to present to you in all honestly this project from the start, to where this will later becoming..whenever that is.

The talented Nicolas Joseph, who makes some outstanding men's Suits to be darn proud of.
The best part of this photo shoot, was how much of a champ he was in his crutches walking around downtown. Never seen a guy who made sprang ankles and strolling around with crutches look so flawless.

Grab the new issue of CS Interiors! Probably my favorite interiors issue to hit the stands so far. For this issue I had the incredible pleasure of photographing some amazing talent. Felicia Ferrone, who I must say, has just the most impressive style I've come across in a long time. Her refurbished apartment is just incredible. T.J and Audra with Studio Murmur, who are insanely talented and conscious of what they are creating a sustainable environment. Also helps that they are one part San Franciscan.
Than there is the talent found in Meghan and Casey; who have joined forces to create some amazing leather products and design. I absolutely loved the chair that was being worked on during our photo shoot.

This month, I photographed the nightlife guru's for the "Dark Knights" article for CS Magazine. We went for a concept of rock star photo spread. The Bull and Bear group (top/right) own Stone Lotus, Bull and Bear, Rockit, and a new unnamed rooftop venture that will be opening shortly in the west loop downtown end. The Eat Well, Drink well group (bottom) own English, Lasalle power company venue, and Angels and Mariachis. Another group, the Four Corners Taven group who are not pictured, own Kirkwood, gaslight, sidebar, and Benchwood.

I've become a bit nostalgic looking through old things, and started combing over every single negative I have since 1999. You know how it is sometimes..you cannot rush perfection. Let alone a scanner.

Wrapped up a wonderful editorial shoot for CS magazines "Power& Arts" issue which will hit newsstands in December.
You can also expect another editorial of some incredible talent to be published soon in the Interiors magazine that will go out sometime in mid-winter.

As for me...Holidays have hit. That means I have some time to work on my studio, and get some much needed couch time in. Possibly a holiday dinner in there..we will see.

The truth in working photographers

Unfortunately this is the sad truth for many people. Especially photo students who get duped into doing wedding photographs for a little cash change. They end up losing anyways with all the expenses they had to place in..remember you should charge accordingly for your services, your labor, and your material expenses..including gas, and car fees. Even if you are using equipment from the school..you're tuition is still paying for that access.
A few disgruntled photographers obviously took out their rant in a craigslist post. I love these posts!

Summertime has finally hit the wonderful city of Chicago once again. It has also kept me busy plotting new photo shoots, and assisting some kick ass photographers once more.

I'm beginning to enjoy collage work right now.
Unfortunately I have no idea what to do with the pieces that have been created.
It's been discussed to submit them for contest..but really
what is the separation between art and photography?
When does photography fall into the lines of art?
its been a long debate for some time now, and the easiest answer
is art is considered art when a person expresses it as art.
I'd really love to sit down and discuss this sometime, if there

Had an amazing meeting with Erika Larsen yesterday. I feel completely encouraged in my work and the direction I need to go from this single meeting. I think she is an absolutely kind, generous, thoughtful, and talented lady. I look forward to her seeing my finish product when I'm done.

Currently away in Portland right now, than off to L.A before settling back into Chicago to start my portfolio.

For the past few months and weeks, I had stepped away from the camera and my work to really observe what my work was
doing for me. It has helped avoid myself from becoming to burnt out on photography that could ultimately make me lose my passion for it. I realize that I've probably been gone too far gone, but at least I know what I want to do. Spending the last 2 years in heavy work load, demands from the schools assignments, and the competitions to please everyone can burn a graduate out, to the point where they just can't feel the passion and love of photography like they first had the day they came into the school. Taking sometime away can be healthy for ones creative process. Sometimes it can turn into similar frustrations of a writers block, but at least I am not going to showcase the work I did for assignments. I know there should be a separation
from ones school work, to what should be in your portfolio to show to the "real world". By Spending time doing sketches of ideas in a journal, and working on a bit of paintings and different crafts in my spare time, has helped me to really examine
myself and the direction I need to go. Now it seems almost inhuman to hold my camera once more. Feelings of forgotten skills and techniques is almost enlightening to me. Observing more of my surroundings have helped me in capturing the things I've wanted to do for my own art sake.

I'm hoping by spring end that there will be so much more to show.

How the times come and gone so quickly. The holidays are underway,and I am left wondering how it has moved by me with a blink of an eye. I feel that I have lost out on so much and I am no longer quite here anymore.

Before the victory or defeat...

I just want to state how important it is to actually be informed about who you are voting for tomorrow, Nov.4th. While the world is only hearing about 2 main party contenders for the election, we are ultimately forgetting that it isn't just about them. We have other house parties contending as well. You may or may not be aware that we are also voting for other officials to take seats to be our voices. Before you actually head to the ballots and think that you are punching one name into the slip of paper. You are also voting for US Senate, Supreme Courts, State Senators, commissioners, Representatives, and Judicial Circuit Court bodies, and they are not just Republican or Democratic. Most people do not even take the time to even quickly scan over their sample ballot or invest by visiting their state election websites. We live in an age of technology, a hop, and simple skip and we can find out what their beliefs or plans of action are. Please, I urge you to voice your opinion as if it was you in that seat, and not just selecting who's name is attached to what political party they could get in. Be Smart and do your homework. It doesn't take more than 15 minutes to do it. ehemm, google...

I think I'm loving Halloween in the city. Something about the atmosphere of families going door to door, fall leaves, good weather, and the bustle of Critical Mass and street traffic just adds a juxtaposition to the environment!
However, I had to celebrate my favorite holiday a week early since I will be confined to the computer working on a overpile of mid-term and final's homework. Thanks school...

I’m a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight….

* If you grow up in Hawaii , raised by your grandparents, you’re “exotic, different.”
* Grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers, a quintessential American story.

* If your name is Barack you’re a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
* Name your kids Willow , Trig and Track, you’re a maverick.

* Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
* Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you’re well grounded.

* If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran’s Affairs committees, you don’t have any real leadership experience.
* If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you’re qualified to become the country’s second highest ranking executive.

Hi, Mom!

Its been crazy for me the last few weeks. School is surrendering what is left of my social being, but the amount of work I am creating, is really starting to show. For one, I have successfully started on a documentary project that I have long pondered how I should present it. Only becoming more passionate, having fun with, and coming back with great images. Plus, the people I am meeting is so interesting and great! I love their stories and what their thoughts are about the line of work they are doing..Unfortunately, I will not be unfolding my project right now. You'll just have to wait for the unveiling in the coming months. Secondly, I decided instead of making a full cohesive body of "fine art" work in my thesis class, that I will just stick to creating, tweaking, reevaluating my degree of style in portraits and editorial work. I am also working on structuralizing my communication skills to get the uncooperative to actually relax. It's actually pretty difficult to just ask someone to pose for you without the issue of them becoming in a sense "cheesy and staged". So now, I have been throwing my acquaintances, my peers, and even strangers in from of my lens at any random moment, just to see what the outcome will be. So far...so good...

this week is spent moving, volunteering at slideluck, assisting, editing, and somewhere in there attending a wedding.

this indepth book that shows the hidden world of his work, is of course my wish list must have right now..unfortunately it is going to cost only the shiniest pennies..a good 700 dollars for me to own this limited edition piece of my favorite photographer. I have this guilty problem of looking at clothing companies advertising pieces when I am taking a break from editing my own images or organizing my files. I actually came across this GAP ad and was admiring the great styling of the clothing when I noticed one HUGE problem with the photograph.
It is understandable that most images are worked in post, but when you have this large of a budget and a nation wide selling point, you would think that they would notice this doozy.

The blond model second from the left, standing between Chanel and Coco, has somehow manage to have three arms! Two of the arms have a grip on her little purple onesie, while a mysterious third seems to be shoving itself into a back pocket of her outfit. I wonder how that managed to get past so many people's eyes..

Busy editing and organizing my hard drive files. Been making a mystery mix cd and in a matter of 2 to 3 hours I got back a list of everything found..Not bad at all..The track listing of the cd that I gave this morning:

Tornado Warning has been advised right now, til 10pm for my location in Chicago, and I am stuck heading to work...Sometimes I wish owners would be a bit wiser about how they conduct business.

My Canon 5D is out of commission for awhile while I send it back for repairs. The electronics decided to quit on me, so I am unable to sync it to any computer or strobe equipment.I've watched this wonderful movie last night.
It has inspired how I want to shift my work this coming semester. The movie is a haunting drama fantasy period piece featuring James Woods, Nick Nolte, and directed by Michael Polish who did Twin Falls Idaho. The backdrop location is just so serene and beautifully pictured. I loved everything about that movie.
Overall after seeing this movie, I created my inspiration board of the appearance I want to achieve. Its old-fashioned period like, serene, and heavenly like feathers..be one the look out as I start getting things together in the coming months..
I finally found an incredible deal on the camera I have been lusting after for a good year, thanks to ebay. I finally can say I am a proud mom to the Mamiya 7II. I still absolutely love my Hasselblad, but this device is going to be a lot easier to carry around the city then my hunky Hasselblad. I'm patiently waiting for it to be delivered to me. The best part about the deal is, the money I spent on ebay will give back 2% to paying back the loans I have occurred since attending Columbia College.

Back to NYC at the end of August..I can't wait

Finally ordered a batch of business cards and some minicards from moo-cards today!
Another 130 dollars lighter in my pocket, but it's all for the sake of my business.

Finally got some film scanned in from New York that I shot with my mom's old point and shoot 35mm..More to come soon...

Back from NYC and absolutely becoming more in love with the opportunities and hospitality I seem to acquire there. I had the great honor of meeting one of my favorite photographers : Eric Ogden, and walked away with some absolutely great advise, and a new found acquaintance. I appreciated so much from him offering his advise. Helped move Jessica into her new apartment, mingled on a nightly basis with other friends, and trying as much to avoid the horrible heat wave that struck NYC while I was there. I came home revived, happy, ready to pack my bags, and to an amazing personality that is inspiring me and my art every day. I am probably on cloud nine. Now trying to handle all the emails requesting my work...
Also, Elite has signed me on as their new photographer.

A little 35mm point and shoot film camera can go a long ways. I'm currently making it my camera of choice while I'm out in NYC.
I can't help but fall in love with this place each time I come out here. Of course, I will always be a Brooklyn girl, over Manhattan.

The semester is finally over! Though, my time hasn't once slowed down since. Friends are flocking into town, either touring, visiting, or passing through. I've collected an assortment of work as well. I am now assisting a photographer, testing for Elite Model Management, and still doing my freelance work. All of this and I leave next week for NYC.
I have to say, though I'm utterly drained from my semester, I've never felt more inspired. Its thanks to all the creative websites, the young artist blogs, the fashion trends. I'm driven, I'm focused on my art and nothing personal for once. I'm recreating my website into a sister sight which will be plastered to visual journal logs. I'm really ready!!
I'm in love with these two images right now. they sum up how I'm feeling, and where my work is heading. Enjoy.

My how time constantly shifts. The opportunities that are happening to me and the work I have been steadily working on, has brighten my spirits for the better. Summer is only rolling in ever so steadily, and soon enough it will be at my front door, giving me the ability to compose my learnings and swiftly jump my sail to growing journeys that have yet to be explored. I'm packing my bags and will be working for a period of time in New York City. I also am planning to return to the state I once called home, just for a short time, just enough to have storybook eyes expand my time lost. My mind has been racing as fast as my computer has died. Another dollar to be spent I assure you enough. But as its always been known, I will never give up the fight, I will never give up, put up, or lose out on what will face me in my path. My heart is stronger than a shield, it is as magnificent as the holy grail.
